Hearing Loss

Do people tell you that the TV is too loud or are you asking people to repeat what they have said to you? Perhaps you should get a hearing test just to be sure it is nothing serious? Perhaps it is just age-related hearing loss, but sometimes it can signal some kind of deterioration of your health. Meniere’s disease is an example of a problem that can cause hearing loss.

Make sure that your eyes and ears are taken care of and checked periodically by specialist such as an opthamologist and audiologist. Sometimes these senses are forgotten in our regular care routine and the damage may be irreversible.

Healthy Ice Cream?

Nothing like ice cream on a hot day, right? Well, unfortunately it is full of fat and sugar and lots of calories. So what do those of us who are health conscious eat on a hot summer day. Well, if it must be ice cream, then you can try some coconut ice cream (more healthy fat and less sugar), but otherwise how about a homemade fruit smoothie with some protein powder or chlorella powder in it? You can also add a little plain yogurt or almond milk. If you want to make a tasty treat for the kids you can make a smoothie and add a little extra water and then freeze into popsicles. A smoothie will also energize you. If you wish you could also juice yourself a nice energy drink with mostly vegetables and just a bit of fruit such as an apple or pear to sweeten it.

Sleep-most refreshing activity

The phrase “sleeping like a baby” is familiar to most of us. However, it seems that as we age, sleeping solid and restfully becomes less of a feat we can accomplish. Maybe because of responsibilities that are on our mind about work and family? Also, sometimes women in menopause will have hot flashes or insomnia that disrupt their rest at night. Sometimes medications can cause insomnia or if you work shift work your body becomes unable to regulate itself because of constantly changing sleeping times.

I know one thing for sure. If you get a solid 7 or 8 hours of sleep per night, your productivity at work or home will increase, you will feel mentally sharper and more focused and your overall mood will be happier. Also, when you get plenty of uninterrupted sleep your body has a chance to fix itself in areas where you may be physically having challenges. Your immune system will be stronger and your cortisol levels will be more able to remain normal.

How do you manage to get yourself back into this state? Some people use melatonin and it will help them sleep better. Others choose to try products such as CBD full spectrum hemp oil or cannabis oils. You can also seek out using medical cannabis if it is legal in your country. You can use high CBD medical cannabis and it will not only help you sleep, but it may help with other medical conditions such as anxiety. Ask your doctor and if they do not know, then ask to be referred to a medical cannabis clinic where the doctors are trained in use of medical cannabis for many physical and mental ailments.

I hope this helps you to get back to “sleeping like a baby”!

Laughter is the Best Medicine

Well, if you are looking for something free to make you feel better then you should go see a good movie in the “comedy” category. You could also get together with some of your friends whose company keeps you upbeat and positive.

It says in the bible “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

So my advice to you is to try changing your outlook on life (more positive) and laugh more. Sometimes you can watch a comedian or read a joke book. Magazines such as Reader’s Digest usually have a few pages of good “laughter is the best medicine.”

So, what does laughing do for you physically? It can lower your blood pressure, release endorphins (feel good hormones), decrease your stress hormones (cortisol), boost your T-cells (immune response) and work those abs (abdominal muscles). Lets face it, after a good “belly laugh” we all feel better!

What do you do when your memory suddenly or slowly starts to fade away and familiar things seem to be forgotten? Sometimes we can find out what the triggers are and at other times they remain a mystery.

I had a problem with my memory every since I got a flu-like illness last January. I had chills, fever, fatigue and worst of all, I started to be very forgetful and even remembering familiar things like driving to the doctors office or a store that I would frequent would cause me to struggle to remember the roads that would take me there. Despite seeing several doctors, no one has actually been able to give me a concrete diagnosis as to why this has happened. After several months now, I seem to be very slowly regaining some of my longer term memory, but my short term is still just not there. I am hoping that given time, I will return to my normal abilities of being able to multi-task and take in several pieces of information without forgetting them as quick as they are given to me. In the meantime, here are some things that you may want to research and try to see if it can help.

Pau D’arco can be drank as a tea and it can kill candida (frequent cause of brain fog), especially if you have been on antibiotics. Some researchers believe candida can cross brain-blood barrier and others think it cannot. Camu camu is an antioxidant that contains 50 times more vitamin C then an orange. Dragon’s blood (Sangre de drago) is good for inflammation. Guayusa can help give you a clear, sharp memory.

John Easterling (Olivia Newton-John’s) husband has created a supplement you might want to try that contains these ingredients. It is called “Ageless Brain” by Organixx.

Neuropathy is simply put-nerve pain. If you have ever suffered from this type of pain perhaps you have diabetes, autoimmune disease or something else causing nerve damage. It can cause tingling, numbness, burning or crawling sensations in your body and it can literally “get on your nerves”. It can disrupt your sleep, cause you to drop things (from numbness) or make you stumble when you walk. The amount of energy that it seems to take to keep your nerves humming can actually make you feel fatigued.

Controlling this type of pain with pain medications is what most people try first. They may use Tylenol or ibuprofen or stronger pain meds such as tegretol, gabapentin or lyrica. These drugs can have side effects which are unpleasant. Also, some prescription drugs may become an addiction problem for some people.

Neuropathic pain is one of the hardest types of pain to treat. An alternative to treating this type of pain is to use medical cannabis. High CBD cannabis may help with inflammation, however you may require a “small” amount of THC in order to control this type of pain (THC products are best taken with an equal or greater amount of CBD and consume only at bedtime). Always remember to take very small amounts of CBD/THC containing products and start low (eg. 0.25 ml for 3-5 days and add 0.1 ml every 3 days until you find relief from the pain. It may take a few weeks to get to the correct doseage. There should be little to no psychoactive effects if done correctly. You may have to try different mixtures of cannabis oils to find what works for you. Work with your doctor or cannabis clinic to find the ultimate product.

Cannabis can be smoked, vaped, eaten or taken as an oil. I always feel that the oils are best and easiest to control the exact amount you wish to consume.

Healthy Mouth and Oil Pulling

Do you have cavities, gingivitis and bad breath? 15-20 minutes of swishing a mouthful (approximently 1 tablespoon) of oil such as sesame seed, coconut or avocado oil around your mouth like a mouthwash will help you to have a better and healthier oral hygiene. How about doing this while you are in the shower to save time? When you are done spit the oil in a throw away cup to prevent it from clogging your drain if using coconut oil.

This is an old Indian folk remedy that has been used for centuries. It reduces the number of harmful bacteria in your mouth thus reducing plaque and cavities. Also, if you desire to remove stains from coffee, tea and other drinks, you should use coconut oil because it will help whiten your teeth. It also helps with your gum health and bad breath. Oil pulling from a couple of times/week to daily can definitely be of benefit. When you are done give your teeth a good brushing with a fluoride-free toothpaste and rinse.
